What is Community?

We believe life is better connected.

In Genesis 2:18, after God creates Adam from the dust of the ground, the LORD God declares, “It is not good for the man to be alone….” That makes me think we weren’t created to live in isolation. We were created to be in community—in relationship with one another just as God exists in relationship as Father, Son, and Spirit.

I am sure you can see this desire for community in your own life. We desire authentic connections with our families, our friends, even our coworkers or classmates. So what does an authentic connection look like? Why is it that we can get along with some people so well, and other times, we find it difficult for a relationship to click?

I’ve found that most of the time, I share similar interests and passions with my community. There’s either a common vision or similar dreams that bring us together. For example, I love strategizing how the Vikings might (one day) with the Super Bowl with my friends from college. I look forward to sharing insights from books I’ve read with my classmates as we dream about our futures. And I am always eager to talk about what God is doing in my life, especially with those who encourage me to keep growing in my faith.

At our church, Lifegroups are the best way to connect with others who share a common love and desire for God—people who will encourage you to keep growing in your faith. Here’s a definition for Lifegroups:

Lifegroup: ~n. a community pursuing an authentic and life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.

At River Valley, we have two primary Lifegroup environments:

  • Core Groups- A group that meets for up to 12 weeks around a specific, predetermined topic.  These groups are focused on building your faith core.  (Check out the Core Principle blog series for a more detailed discussion of our faith cores.)
  • Community Groups- 6 to 15 adults, usually in the same stage of life, who meet regularly for up to a year to pursue spiritual growth and healthy relationships.

Our vision is that your Community Group will be an invaluable part of your life. We want to give you a space to dream and grow with other like-minded world-changers. We are blessed with a church full of passionate, visionary Christ-followers as well many who are just beginning their journey with Jesus. No matter where you are, all of us something to give to others. Your experiences and insights are invaluable to the body of Christ, so let’s not settle for a church experience void of authentic community. Let’s be connected, spurring one another on to become all God has called us to be.
